Census starts in Bali

The countrywide population census inaugurated in Bali last Wednesday, earlier than elsewhere, and has already been decelerated by a religious ritual in this devoutly Hindu island.

The province began the census three weeks before than the national agenda of May 1 to May 31 because the province will also accommodate territorial elections in Denpasar, Badung, Tabanan, Bangli and Karangasem on May 4.

Other major outcomes planned for May include Galungan and Kuningan, two major Hindu festivals, on May 12 and 22.

“We foresaw the approaching religious celebrations, and so we began the census before so that we could work around these other major national activities,” Wisnu said.

The census is channeled in two phases. In the first phase, officers make a list of constructions and gather basic information from residents, including the number of people sleeping in each household.

In the second phase, officials collect more specific data by asking residents questions on 43 demographic variables relating to economic and social condition. By The Jakarta Post
